Guide for Using MediaWiki in a Hosted Environment
MediaWiki is a free and open-source software package originally developed as a platform for Wikipedia but now widely used by companies, government departments and individuals for a diverse range of knowledgebases, intranets and websites. The documentation available on the MediaWiki.org website is comprehensive but seems useful primarily for high-end users or systems administrators with direct access to the server.
The aim of this Guide, however, is to assist individuals or others considering a MediaWiki-based website on a hosted environment, without access to a server.
The seven major topic areas below start with the question "Is MediaWiki right for you?". If you do choose to use MediaWiki then I hope the articles in this Guide will assist you.
In each article there are also links to relevant Manuals and Help pages on the MediaWiki.org website.
